ChiChilTah Chapter

The BIA built a school in 1934. Due to the large forest of oak trees on a valley area, the new school was named Chech'iltah, meaning “among the trees”. Since Navajo was not a written language, there was problem in spelling out the name. Robert Cousins, local trader at Cousins Trading Post started use of the name by spelling it “Chichilgeetho", who was not nearly the liking of most interpreters. It was not until 1970 that the name was changed to the currently accepted spelling of “ChiChilTah”.

The ChiChilTah Chapter conducts monthly meetings to keep residents informed; residents have a forum to express their opinions to their Navajo Nation Council Delegate or to decide on matters concerning their chapter.
The community is located about 25 miles southwest of Gallup, New Mexico in McKinley County, or the southwestern part of the Eastern Navajo Agency. The chapter land base is about 207.4 square feet above sea level. Most of the area is covered with evergreen – ponderosa, juniper, pinon, and oak. There are open grassy meadows, canyons, and sandy hills.
